Winter weather blocks view of meteors.

Today's storm also will serve as a celestial show-stopper, with clouds likely obscuring remnants of one of the year's larger meteor showers.

After unseasonably warm temperatures over the weekend and high temperatures in Reno on Monday exceeding 60 degrees, another storm is headed for the region today.

Rain and winds gusting up to 55 mph are expected in the Reno-Carson area today, while light snow in the mountains should intensify through the day into tonight.

It's really a "run of the mill" December storm, but it represents a change, said Alex Hoon, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

"It's definitely a return to a more winter pattern," Hoon said.

Along Sierra ridges, winds today could gust in excess of 100 mph. Snow levels are expected to start high but lower to Lake Tahoe or below later in the day.

Up to 18 inches of snow might fall along the Sierra crest, with 6 to 12 inches expected above 7,000 feet. Several inches of snow are possible around Lake Tahoe.

"The snow is going to accumulate pretty fast," Hoon said. "It's definitely going to cause some travel issues.

Crystal Bowersox: The Reality Rocks

Many past "American Idol" contestants have milked personal sob stories to increase their likability factor, but during Season 9, runner-up Crystal Bowersox only needed to rely on her immense talent to get all the way to the finale. She kept much of her personal life tightly under wraps during the show, but still, viewers couldn't help but detect a depth of pain and hard-won life experience behind her quiet, steely exterior.

When I recently got the chance to interview Crystal over at Sony Music headquarters in Los Angeles, talk about her goal to not make a typical "cheesy" Idol album and the possibility of her crossing over to the country market soon led (around the 4:30 mark in the video below) to a heartfelt discussion about her album's "here I am, this is my story, take it or leave it" statement song.

It's definitely autobiographical. I never want to talk about my mother poorly because she did the best she could...She was a single mom of three kids. That is not easy...We were poor and she would get frustrated and she didn't know how to deal with her emotions, and she'd turn to drinking and things would get physical a lot in our house growing up...There was constant chaos, cops on the lawn, physical fights and stuff. A lot of my youth was very dark and ugly. But I don't see 'Farmer's Daughter' as a dark song, because for me it was healing.

Josh Turner Biography

Josh Turner Biography. A native of Hannah, SC, deep-voiced Josh Turner burst on the country scene in 2003 with the powerful "Long Black Train," a song Turner had written after listening to a Hank Williams box set. Sounding like a gospel-blues out of the 1940s, "Long Black Train" wrestles with the grand themes of temptation, salvation, death, and redemption, and the song quickly brought Turner national media attention. His first album, Long Black Train, produced by Frank Rogers, was released by MCA in 2003. Prior to the album release, Turner had issued two 7" vinyl singles, "She'll Go on You" and "Long Black Train," both backed with the same B-side, "Backwoods Boy." A second album on MCA, Your Man, was released in 2006 and reached number two on the Top 200.

Carrie Underwood Top Winner At American Country Awards Carrie Underwood Top Winner At American. When it comes to Las Vegas, Carrie Underwood is a sure bet.

Underwood won her second country music artist of the year award of 2010 in Sin City on Monday night (Dec. 7). She earned it at the inaugural American Country Awards about eight months after she won the top honor at the Academy of Country Music Awards in April.

In both cases, fans determined the winner. And when it comes to fan support, Underwood has no match. Her fans vote early and often - a holdover from her time as "American Idol" champion - and she made sure to give a shoutout to her supporters after winning six awards.

"We have had the most amazing year out on the road but we wouldn't be doing anything if there weren't people out there sitting in that audience," Underwood said from the stage at the MGM Grand, where the ACMs also are held.

"So to everybody that came out to see us [or] anybody else out here, you guys are awesome for supporting us like you do. God bless the fans."

Lady Antebellum took home four Fender Stratocasters given out as trophies and Easton Corbin finished with three wins, including breakthrough artist of the year. The two acts were tied for the most nominations with seven.

Along with artist of the year, Underwood won album of the year for "Play On" and tour of the year.

Lady A won single of the year for the trio's breakthrough, "Need You Now," and artist of the year: duo or group. Brad Paisley was voted male artist of the year and Blake Shelton and host Trace Adkins won music video of the year.

The show was performance heavy and featured Rascal Flatts and Alan Jackson performing medleys of their hits after tributes, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan teaming up on "My Kinda Party," and Toby Keith, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Josh Turner and the Band Perry playing recent hits.

Adkins opened the show by declining to wear a pair of "meat chaps" offered by the show's producers, a la Lady Gaga's meat dress, in a pre-taped comedy skit. He also appeared to skip the monologue.
