Costume Gets an Upgrade Wonder Woman

Costume Gets an Upgrade Wonder Woman. When "Wonder Woman" announced that Adrianne Palicki had been cast in the title role, buzz on the superhero show quickly shot through the roof. But then fans got a look at the ill advised costume. Outrage quickly ensued. And hell hath no fury like a comic fan outraged.

The anger stemmed from Wonder Woman's shiny, rubber-like pants and high heels. It looked like a cheap version of a "sexy" Halloween costume. Fans cried out this is no way for a superhero, especially one of the most beloved of all time, to dress.

The blogosphere immediately went into cynical overdrive. Commenters on EW's article speculated that the show would be canceled in a matter of weeks. SlashFilm wrote that the outfit did little to inspire confidence in the show's prospects.

Leonard Nimoy turns 80, plans party with Gypsies and Vagabonds. Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed Spock in the original "Star Trek" series, turned 80 on Saturday and received birthday wishes from NASA and former co-star George Takei on Twitter.

Nimoy, whose career has spanned for 50-years, recently guest-starred on "Fringe" and regularly appears at conventions and events. Nimoy will be celebrating his big day with a birthday party full of "gypsies and vagabonds," according to a recent Tweet.

"I told my Dad I'm going to be an actor," Nimoy wrote on Twitter. "He said I'd be palling with gypsies and vagabonds. They'll all be at my party this weekend."

Nimoy's father owned a barbershop in Boston and one of the most popular haircuts offered was the "Spock cut," in honor of his son's iconic role.

Nimoy has revisited his "Star Trek" character in several movies, including the most recent 2009 re-make. The actor has also written, directed and produced several projects. The actor also recorded an album "Spaced Out" with his "Star Trek" co-star and friend William Shatner. In a recent interview, Nimoy talked to the "Star Trek" fan site about why he keeps doing appearances, when most actors would have retired and he said it was a "thank you" to his fans.

That's exactly what it is, a thank you," Nimoy told TrekToday.com of his public appearances. "I still feel an obligation to be out there for them, to tell them the 'Star Trek' stories and to bring them up to date on what I'm doing. There's still a lot of interest. I don't know when I will stop doing this. I think there is an end in sight. I will not going on doing it indefinitely, but I am scheduled for three or four events for this year."

Nimoy received a 'Happy Birthday' greeting from NASA on Twitter on Saturday morning.

"Earlier this week it was @WilliamShatner's birthday," NASA wrote. "Let's give the bridge equal billing and wish happy birthday to @TheRealNimoy LLAP!"

Earlier in the month, Shatner recorded a wake-up call for crew members of the space shuttle Discover as the astronauts returned to Earth.

On Monday, March 7, the crew undocked from the International Space Station for the last time and the theme song of the original 1960s "Star Trek" series was played for them. However, instead of the regular monologue that is heard at the end of it, a recorded message of Shatner spoofing the famous words of his character, Captain James T. Kirk, was played instead.

Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo 3DS. According to people who make way more money than the rest of us, the future of entertainment will be presented in glorious 3D. I'm not sure consumers are entirely onboard with this yet, but apparently it's just a matter of time until we're all spilling the guacamole bowl because we refuse to take off our dorky glasses during Super Bowl L.

All of us, that is, except the folks at Nintendo.

The longtime handheld video game king releases its heavily-anticipated 3DS system on March 27, ending a wild year's worth of rumors, speculation, and hyperbolic praise. Boasting glasses-free 3D technology, it's the company's answer to the serious threat posed by Apple's various iOS devices, and a preemptive strike against old rival Sony and their Next Generation Portable due out later this year.

But more importantly, is it any good? Absolutely but not necessarily for the reason you think. Read on for some answers to what are likely your most pressing 3DS questions.

Mega Millions winning numbers drawn; $312 million jackpot

Advertisements
Mega Millions winning numbers drawn; $312 million jackpot. Mega Millions winning lottery numbers drawn tonight were: 22, 24, 31, 52 and 54. The Mega Ball is 4.

Mega Millions lottery game’s jackpot had soared to $312 million after no one won the grand prize in Tuesday night’s drawing.

Despite the long odds of winnings, sales of the Mega Millions tickets were brisk in Salem County Friday as the evening drawing drew time drew closer.

The multi-state lottery game is played in New Jersey and numerous other states around the nation.

Players may pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers — five different numbers from 1 to 56 and one number from 1 to 46 — or allow the machine to pick your numbers. You win the jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in a drawing.

Besides the jackpot, there are several smaller prizes for those who pick many, but not all of the winning numbers.

A player can choose to take their winnings over 26 year payments or they can choose to take a lump sum payment. If the jackpot is approximately $312 million, a lump sum payment would be approximately $198 million.

Mega Millions tickets cost $1 per play.

This jackpot has been growing since February 1, when the Mega Millions jackpot was last won. The jackpot has now rolled 14 times without a winner. The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately one in 176 million. The odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes are approximately 1 in 40.

Mega Millions has awarded 110 jackpots since the first drawing on May 17, 2002. In that time, more than 21.88 billion tickets have been sold nationwide. Each participating state determines how its Mega Millions profits are spent. In many states, profits are earmarked for education. The beneficiaries in other states include parks, natural resources, property tax relief, programs to help the elderly and several other important causes.

Mega Millions is currently played in 43 jurisdictions (41 states plus the District of Columbia and the U. S. Virgin Islands). Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m.

Mega Millions Mania Hits the Region

Advertisements
Mega Millions Mania Hits the Region. The Mega Millions jackpot reached $312 million and if a single jackpot-winning ticket is sold in Pennsylvania, it would be the largest jackpot ever won in the history of the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Let's get right to it, the winning Mega Millions numbers for Friday's drawing were 22, 24, 31, 52,54 and a Mega ball of 4.

Tickets for the multi-state drawing drew crowds to gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores in Delaware and New Jersey.

Friday's winner -- if there is one -- would receive about $198 million if they opt for the cash lump sum.

In Tuesday's drawing, a Delaware County, Pa. ticket worth $250,000, sold at a Wawa in Essington, matched the first five numbers, but not the Mega Ball, according to Philly.com.

The Pa. Lottery was selling around $3,000 tickets every minute as of noon on Tuesday.

Programs benefiting older Pennsylvanians have received about $5 million from ticket sales.

Pa. has yet to have a Mega Millions winner -- meaning no one has matched all five numbers and the Mega ball -- since it launched the game more than a year ago.

But six tickets sold here in Pennsylvania in 2011 have resulted in a second-tier prize totaling a quarter-of-a-million dollars.

This prize is the largest in North America since a jackpot of $380 million was split between two winners in January.

Stunning Homes of Pop Divas

Advertisements

Stunning Homes of Pop Divas . The term “diva” is derived from the Italian word for “goddess” and was originally used to refer to divinely talented and fanatically celebrated female opera stars. The term is now used more widely to describe gifted women performers in all musical genres.

Modern-day divas are also known for their fine tastes and high style. So when a diva moves house, the property she leaves behind will fit even the most discriminating buyer.

Here are five properties on the market that have served as homes to music’s biggest divas.

Lady Gaga
10968 Savona Rd., Los Angeles, CA
The 24-year-old superstar reportedly rents the 6,200-square-foot “Villa Savona” in Bel Air, Calif. Renting allows this diva to change her mind on a whim and move whenever she’s in the mood. Gaga’s rental is also available for rent at $19,500 per month and listed for sale for $4.5 million. Not clear where Gaga is decamping to next – maybe another luxury rental?

Villa Savona offers “jetliner” views of the ocean, a nearby canyon and city. Tenants can take a dip in the pool, soak in the spa or cozy up in a master suite and avoid the paparazzi.

Christina Aguilera
1443 Devlin Dr., Los Angeles, CA
This four-time Grammy Award winner is trying to unload her ultra-mod 1960s home in Los Angeles for just under $6 million. The former “Star Search” contestant and “Mickey Mouse Club” member appears to be moving on after her divorce from music producer Jordan Bratman.

The 6,500-square-foot home in West Hollywood offers views of the city, canyon, and ocean through its glass walls. The neighborhood is an enclave for the rich and famous with easy access to the best the city has to offer. She equipped the home with a screening room and music studio. There’s also a large pool, a 12-person spa and an outdoor fireplace.

Sheryl Crow
6662 Cross Keys Rd., College Grove, TN
This nine-time Grammy winner, former Michael Jackson backup singer, ex-paramour of Lance Armstrong and mother of two, put her solar-powered equestrian estate in Tennessee up for online auction after not getting a buyer for her $7.5 million asking price. But, the reserve was not met at the auction, and it looks like Crow still hasn’t found a buyer. The bidding is closed for now, but the auction site is still online at Sherylcrowauction.com.

The 10,624-square-foot main house features French-inspired architecture and sits on 150 acres. Crow purchased the property, named Cross Creek Farm, in 2006. It has a saltwater pool, a 14-stall barn, indoor riding arena, media room, a recording studio, dual solar systems, and a three-bedroom guesthouse.

Alicia Keys
12 Serenite Lane, Syosset, NY
This Grammy winner, newlywed and new mom is trying to sell her home on New York’s Long Island for the fire-sale price of $2.3 million after buying it for almost $4 million in 2005. While the 2.2-acre, seven-bedroom mansion will serve anyone with an “Empire State of Mind,” it's also big enough for a family.

The home also features a 50-foot pool with Jacuzzi, poolhouse and patio. The gourmet eat-in kitchen is fit for divas who like to cook and some divas do.

Kelly Clarkson
716 Westview Ave., Nashville, TN
Clarkson, “American Idol’s” first winner, is selling her “modest” 4,900-square-foot Tennessee home. Located in a posh suburb of Nashville, the house is listed for $1.5 million, $41,000 less than Clarkson paid for it in 2007. The stone house has five bedrooms and bathrooms, and a screened porch with one of the property’s three fireplaces. The master bedroom on the main level has an ensuite bath with a luxurious soaking tub.

The home features a wood-paneled office suited for a two-time Grammy winner and multi-platinum selling artist. There is also a recreation room above the three-car garage, and a living room with a fireplace. Clarkson reportedly did not live in the house full-time, as her primary residence is a 50-acre property in Fort Worth, Texas, but she needed a place to stay while collaborating with country singer Reba McEntire.

Derrick Rose Japan Donation: Giving $1,000 For Every Point Scored Friday To Earthquake And Tsunami Relief

Derrick Rose Japan Donation: Giving $1,000 For Every Point Scored Friday To Earthquake And Tsunami Relief. Derrick Rose has led his team to a performance few could have predicted this season. His Chicago Bulls are in first place by a game in the Eastern Conference, and he's played himself into serious contention for the league's MVP award.

He's also taking the lead in one of the league's charitable efforts: for Friday night's match-up with the Memphis Grizzlies, the superstar will donate $1,000 for every point he scores to Direct Relief International, a group that helps provide medical care for those affected by the disaster in Japan.

Rose, who averages 24.9 points per game, isn't the only NBA star getting in on the charity action: the Lakers' Pau Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge of the Trail Blazers, Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City, and many other big-time scorers have also agreed to chip in $1,000 per point, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Others who are less likely to have explosive scoring nights, including Bulls fan favorite and perennial pine-rider Brian Scalabrine, have agreed to donate fixed amounts to the cause, a press release explains.

Fans interested in joining their favorite stars in the Japan relief efforts can text “Give10” to 20222 to give $10 to Japan, or can donate directly to the Japan Relief and Recovery Fund at www.directrelief.org/Japanrelief.

Here's hoping the Grizzlies feel a little bit guilty about sticking a hand in Rose's face during Friday night's game. Ease up on the D, Mike Conley, it's for a good cause

Her Tweet prompted Lopez to apologize late Thursday. "I misjudged the joke," he Tweeted. "No malice was intended and I apologize to Kirstie.

Mississippi Neighbors Shoot At Each Other Over Defecating Dog

Advertisements
Mississippi Neighbors Shoot At Each Other Over Defecating Dog. JACKSON, Miss. An argument between two armed neighbors over a dog and its feces escalated to a shootout in rural Mississippi, sending one neighbor to the hospital with injuries from shotgun pellets and the other neighbor to jail.

Terry Tenhet, 52, told The Associated Press he was struck Wednesday in both hands, the shoulder, chest and side by the spray of pellets from shotgun blasts fired by his neighbor, Jerry Blasingame, 60. The wounds are not life threatening.

Washington County Sheriff's Assistant Chief Deputy Billy Barber said Tenhet was angry at Blasingame because he thought Blasingame's mixed-breed dog had defecated in his lawn.

Each man described his side of the argument and shootout to The Associated Press.

Tenhet says he was friends with Blasingame and only went over to his house to complain in general about the dog feces in his lawn – not to accuse him – and encountered a drunk and irate neighbor.

Blasingame told the AP that they argued because Tenhet shot his dog last week and threatened to kill him and his dog "over poop."

Tenhet denies shooting the dog: "I said 'Jerry, your dog ain't even dead. He said 'Just meet me at the levee and I'll shoot you down.'"

Blasingame said he got a gun and left the house in his truck, hoping Tenhet would follow so there would be no confrontation in front of bystanders.

Tenhet did not follow and said Blasingame returned to the neighborhood from a different direction in an apparent attempt to ambush him.

Lindsay Lohan Is Dropping the Lohan

Advertisements
Lindsay Lohan Is Dropping the Lohan. When you hear the name "Lindsay," do you immediately think of the tabloid target and sometime-actress, or your co-worker/sister/friend who happens to have the same name.

"Lindsay" is a common moniker among young American women, and we know at least 20 Lindsays dating back from kindergarten; even so, Lindsay Lohan inarguably the most famous of them all is banking on being the one and only.

"Lindsay is dropping the Lohan and just going by Lindsay. Plus, me and (younger daughter) Ali will be officially changing our last names back to my maiden name, Sullivan," a dead serious Dina Lohan tells Popeater.

Apparently, the court-going star had been on the fence about dropping "Lohan" until the E-trade Super Bowl commercial in which a baby was referred to as "that milkaholic Lindsay."

Talk about name recognition. That being said, "Lindsay" does not have the same unique power as "Oprah," "Madonna," "Cher" or "Beyonce." Then again, only a handful of people around the world can say, "Hi, my name is Beyonce."

"Now you can add Lindsay to that list," says a Lohan pal. "And it's a way for them all to start over. No one in the family wants anything to do with Lindsay's father (Michael Lohan) anymore and that includes sharing a last name."

We can't argue with that. As you might recall, Papa Lohan -- no stranger to brushes with the law -- was arrested for striking ex-girlfriend Kate Major.

Meanwhile, Lohan herself might want some distance from her own infamous problems: the former "Mean Girls" phenom, now virtually unhirable in Hollywood, will soon stand trial for felony grand theft after rejecting a plea deal that involved jail time.

If Lohan -- excuse us, Lindsay -- removes her notorious last name, she'll erase some family heritage dating back to County Cork in Ireland.

Still, it will haunt her forever: The Internet has a long memory, and "Lohan" headlines stretch back some seven years. We feel worse for the all the world's Lindsays whose identities will practically be stolen by an alleged celebrity jewelry thief.

Ashley said this about her Prom experience and the reason why she's fronts Donatemydress.org which accepts dresses for high school teens who desire to attend their prom night but can't afford to purchase a new dress.

"In high school, I had to work several jobs to save enough to buy a prom dress.

Ashley who called it quits with Joe Jonas was reportedly spotted out with musician Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill. But just last evening (3.23) Ashley was reportedly out having fun with some friends when the paps asked about her recent break up, “That’s not very nice,” Greene snapped at the pap. She's Got Elizabeth Taylor Eyes

Advertisements
She's Got Elizabeth Taylor Eyes. In death, as in life, it is her eyes that haunt.

After Hollywood's grande dame Elizabeth Taylor passed away, people paid their online respects, searching out her biography, baby pictures, good works (AIDS foundation), her relationships both familial (children, Richard Burton) and famous (Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol). Yet most unique were those eyes, and people wanted another look into them as they sought out "elizabeth taylor eyes," "elizabeth taylor violet eyes pictures," and "elizabeth taylor's eye close up.

Could someone's eyes truly be purple? If photos or her namesake perfume -- Violet Eyes, which debuted just last spring -- weren't proof enough, eyewitness accounts certainly testify to those riveting orbs. A remembrance by Hollywood Reporter film critic Todd McCarthy recalled a meeting in the 1970s, when the actress had essentially retired from the big screen. "What should abruptly stop me in my tracks," he wrote, "but a pair of eyes unlike I've ever beheld, before or since; deep violet eyes of a sort withheld from ordinary mortals that were suddenly looking up into mine from mere inches away.

David Stratton, a film critic for the Australian, also swooned in a 1973 encounter following a festival premiere of her movie "Night Watch": "I was ushered into her presence at the official reception and found myself transfixed by her famous violet eyes. I have never seen eyes of that color before or since and I don't believe cinemagoers were able to appreciate how remarkable they were."

Eye of the Beholder

Violet is indeed a rarity, more so than green eyes, although theories as to what makes them purple vary. Color, of course, is determined by how much melanin pigment the eye has and, to get really scientific, those variations in single nucleotide polymorphisms (thankfully shortened to SNPS) near the OCA2 gene, which are responsible for the color of eyes, hair, and skin. Then again, the simplest explanation would be the same one her doctor gave her mother when describing baby Elizabeth's double row of eyelashes: a "mutation," according to the 1996 book Elizabeth.

Those eyes inspired longing, envy, and a few beauty products: Chicago optical company Wesley-Jensen created violet contact lenses in the 1980s. Before their debut, a W-J spokesperson told The New York Times, "pictures of Elizabeth Taylor are pasted all over our R&D lab." A California ocularist, one of the few in the world to create artificial eyeballs, fulfilled one patient's request for "Elizabeth Taylor eyes."

If you wondered what the scent of violet eyes might be, that would be "light shades of purple rose and violet peony, combined with velvety accents of white peach" with a "voluptuous blend of cedar wood and amber [to] convey the power, sensuality, and mystery of Elizabeth Taylor's eyes.

Elizabeth Taylor Laid To Rest Near Michael Jackson At Forest Lawn Cemetary In Glendale. Dame Elizabeth Taylor has been laid to rest.

The Oscar winner, Hollywood legend and AIDS activist's funeral took place on Thursday afternoon at Forest Lawn Memorial Parks & Mortuaries in Glendale, Calif.

PLAY IT NOW: A Look Back: Elizabeth Taylor & Michael Jackson's Unlikely Friendship

"Elizabeth Taylor was laid to rest this afternoon at a small private funeral service attended by family and close friends in The Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn-Glendale. The service was scheduled to begin at 2 PM but at Miss Taylor's request started late. Miss Taylor had left instructions that it was to begin at least 15 minutes later than publicly scheduled, with the announcement, 'She even wanted to be late for her own funeral,'" a statement from the late actress' rep to Access Hollywood read.

Rabbi Jerry Cutler officiated the service and Colin Farrell, described by the rep as a "close friend" of the actress, recited Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem "The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo."

Afterward, Elizabeth's son Michael Wilding, her grandson Tarquin Wilding, and her daughter Liza Burton Tivey, read other selections.

Her grandson Rhys Tivey performed a moving trumpet solo of "Amazing Grace," according to the rep.

Elizabeth had a closed casket service and it was draped with gardenias, violets and lily of the valley.

She was interred at the Great Mausoleum, "sheltered beneath a soaring marble Michelangelo angel," the statement concluded.

Forest Lawn in Glendale is also where Elizabeth's longtime close friend, Michael Jackson, is entombed. It was not immediately clear if Elizabeth chose to be buried near her friend or if it was merely a coincidence.

The Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn in Glendale is also where Michael was laid to rest in 2009. Clark Gable and Jean Harlow are also interred in the majestic burial site, according to Radar Online.

Five limousines carrying family members arrived shortly before the service, which lasted about an hour. White flowers were also spotted being delivered to the mortuary.

Prior to the service, Tom Lorez, a spokesperson for Glendale Police Department, told reporters that authorities expected a "peaceful event." He added that approximately "three dozen" guests would be attending the service.

Following the screen legend's death on Thursday, the Taylor family asked fans, in lieu of flowers, to contribute towards the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

The actress died peacefully at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA on Wednesday surrounded by her children, Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton. She had been hospitalized six weeks ago with congestive heart failure, a condition with which she had struggled for some years.

Is Kyle Singler a First-Round Lock Duke Basketball

Advertisements
Is Kyle Singler a First-Round Lock Duke Basketball. Kyle Singler's successful college career ended three games earlier than he hoped. Now he is left to prepare for the upcoming NBA Draft, and what he likely hopes will be a long NBA career.

The chances of him having that long NBA career are certainly debatable. The 6'8" forward has the shooting stroke and instincts that scouts love. He has a great feel for the game, which allows him to be a solid off the ball defender and excellent passer.

Where the questions of his viability as a NBA come into play revolve around his athleticism. He lacks the quickness to be able to stay in front of NBA small forwards and the size to keep power forwards away from the basket.

He looks like the classic tweener that will be a solid player to bring off the bench for a spark when a team wants to go small, is playing zone defense, or needs another shooter to space the floor.

NBADraft.net currently has him going with the last pick in the first round. They also sum up why he may not crack a starting lineup in the NBA:

"He can do a little bit of everything offensively: shoot, pass, rebound, just not one thing good enough that makes him stand out in a GMs eyes when you consider his physical and athletic limitations"

Arizona Defeats Top-Seeded Duke at NCAA Tournament

Arizona Defeats Top-Seeded Duke at NCAA Tournament. Duke University’s reign as national champion ended with a 93-77 loss to the University of Arizona that left coach Mike Krzyzewski stuck on 900 wins, two short of tying the men’s major college basketball career mark.

Derrick Williams had 32 points and 13 rebounds and Arizona (30-7) took control with a 19-2 run early in the second half last night to give the Blue Devils (32-5) their most lopsided defeat of the season.

“Williams, he’s just a superb player, he’s better than anybody we’ve played,” Krzyzewski said in a news conference. “There’s a physicality to his game. He’s a clean, beautiful player.”

Arizona will play the University of Connecticut (29-9) tomorrow in the West Regional final at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Kemba Walker scored 36 points to lead the Huskies to a 74-67 win yesterday against San Diego State University.

The University of Florida (29-7) and Butler University (26- 9) advanced to the Southeast Regional final in New Orleans. Florida won 83-74 in overtime against Brigham Young University, which got 32 points from national scoring leader Jimmer Fredette. Butler, which lost the national championship game last year to Duke, was a 61-54 winner against the University of Wisconsin.

Buckeyes In Action

There are four more Round of 16 games today, including a contest between overall top seed Ohio State and seven-time national champion Kentucky. The winners will play in the regional finals, and the four regional champions advance to the national semifinals April 2 in Houston.

Arizona, which trailed 44-38 at halftime, outscored the Blue Devils 55-33 in the second half. The fifth-seeded Wildcats shot 58 percent after halftime and outrebounded top-seeded Duke 25-9.

“The second half was like a second game, we were a total team,” Arizona coach Sean Miller said in a news conference. “We were revved up.”

Williams, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, hit 11 of 17 shots -- going 5-for-6 on 3-pointers -- for Arizona, which entered the game as a 9 1/2-point underdog, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers. Lamont Jones added 16 points for the Wildcats and Solomon Hill had 13.

Jones’s next assignment will be guarding Connecticut’s Walker, his “best friend” and former high school teammate from Rice High School in New York City. “He’s like my brother,” Jones said.
Duke’s Biggest Loss

Freshman point guard Kyrie Irving had 28 points to lead Duke, whose worst previous loss this season was 93-78 at St. John’s on Jan. 30. Duke became the second No. 1 regional seed eliminated from the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The University of Pittsburgh, the top team in the Southeast Regional, lost last weekend.

“The tournament is cruel,” said Krzyzewski. “It’s an abrupt end for everybody when you don’t win. The better team won tonight.”

Krzyzewski needs two wins to tie the men’s Division I career mark of 902 held by his former Army coach and mentor, Bob Knight.

Connecticut, the third seed in the West, closed its win with a 9-3 scoring run over the final three minutes. The turning point came midway through the second half with second-seeded San Diego State leading 53-49.

The Aztecs’ Jamaal Franklin bumped into Walker, who fell backward onto the court, as the teams headed to their benches for a timeout. Franklin was given a technical foul and Walker hit those two free throws, starting an 11-1 run by Big East conference champion Connecticut.
‘Ran Into Me’

“I was walking on my way to the huddle and one of their players ran into me,” Walker said. “The contact was definitely enough to go down.”

Jeremy Lamb, who hit nine of 11 shots and all three of his 3-pointers, added 24 points for Connecticut, which has won eight straight postseason games. Kawhi Leonard scored 12 points for San Diego State, four below his season average.

“When your season comes to a screeching halt like it will for every team with one exception, it hurts,” San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said. “For our team this year, for what they’ve accomplished, it hurts exponentially more.”

Butler, which lost to Duke in last year’s NCAA championship game, is a win away from the Final Four after Matt Howard’s 20- point, 12-rebound effort against fourth-seeded Wisconsin.

Butler, the eighth seed in the Southeast, held Wisconsin to 30 percent shooting.

The Bulldogs’ next opponent, second-seeded Florida, outscored BYU 15-6 in overtime to return to the regional finals for the first time since 2007.

“We’re thrilled to still be playing, and that’s the bottom line,” Butler coach Brad Stevens said. “I don’t think that this group goes into games not believing. We’re going to see if we can’t try to get one on Saturday and move on.

Jimmy Carter planning trip to North Korea

Jimmy Carter planning trip to North Korea. Former President Jimmy Carter is planning to travel to North Korea, perhaps as soon as April, the State Department said Thursday.

The department has been “made aware of the trip,” spokesman Mark Toner said, declining to offer any other details.

Carter’s spokeswoman did not immediately respond to POLITICO’s request for more information about the former president’s travel plans.

The confirmation came on the heels of a Wednesday report from South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency that a trip was in the works and that former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former Irish President Mary Robinson and former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland may join Carter in his travels.

Officials in Seoul are paying close attention to the trip, South Korean foreign ministry spokesman Cho Byung-Jae said Thursday. “All the communications currently under way for the visit are purely private talks … and the U.S. government also said his trip would be a personal visit,” he said, AFP reported.

Carter has traveled to the secretive communist country before. He visited Pyongyang in 1994 as an envoy for then-President Bill Clinton and helped defuse tensions over North Korea’s nuclear program. He also traveled there last summer to negotiate for the release of Aijalon Mahli Gomes, an American teacher who entered the country in 2009 on a humanitarian and religious mission.

In November, Carter wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post urging the Obama administration to “consider responding” to Pyongyang’s deadly shelling of a South Korean island.

Bigfoot Thomas Byers, North Carolina Man

Advertisements
Bigfoot Thomas Byers, North Carolina Man. A North Carolina man, Thomas Byers, claims to have captured the legendary Bigfoot on video.

Unfortunately, the 5-second clip -- filmed in Rutherford County on Tuesday -- shows little more than a blurry silhouette running across a road, and a sound that Byers alleges to be the creature's "snarl."

Byers' website -- where he initially posted the clip and his accompanying tale of the encounter -- has him confessing every detail of the Bigfoot ("Knobby," as he calls it), from its six to seven foot height to it's stench reeking "like a cross between road kill and a skunk."

But alas, the Internet loves mysterious creatures (see last month's "Loch Ness" photo), and with word of the new supposed Bigfoot video spreading around, the term began trending on Yahoo and Google, with everyone from Fox News, MSNBC, and the LA Times picking up the story.

Color us skeptical, but it's clear to see from the extremely blurry video that anyone could've hopped in a remotely furry-looking outfit and ran across the road for their chance at 15 seconds of Internet fame. And we all know Bigfoot has a shady history of faked footage.

Perhaps it's not a bad thing though, as naturalist for the National Wildlife Federation David Mizejewski said in one if his HuffPost blogs: "Anything that gets people interested in the natural world and inspires them to get outside is a good thing.

Rose McGowan On 'Law and Order

Advertisements
Rose McGowan On 'Law and Order. Rose McGowan is pretty good at this dangerous and sexy niche role.

The "Charmed" actress took her highly anticipated guest turn on "Law & Order: SVU" on Wednesday night, playing a sexy "bombshell" named Cassandra Davina. She's a regular at partner-swapping swingers parties, a seedy underground where detectives Benson and Stabler find themselves. For business purposes, of course.

Without giving away spoilers for the DVR set, McGowan finds herself in the middle of the action -- police, and swinging.

The actress spoke about the part in a recent press conference, giving some insight into her role. "Cassandra is a complex character and that’s what I liked about her," McGowan said. "She had a lot of different layers. She’s got her own plots going no matter what. I think she’s always thinking of a different angle.

Elizabeth Taylor: A Look Back at a Legend

Advertisements
Elizabeth Taylor: A Look Back at a Legend. During her 79 years, Elizabeth Taylor -- classic beauty, serial monogamist, Oscar winner, AIDS activist -- captivated the world with her big-screen roles and her real-life dramas.

Born in Britain, Taylor and her American parents moved to Los Angeles at the age of seven, and became a bona fide star by age 12, with her starring role in the classic 1944 film "National Velvet," one of a whopping 50 movies she'd appear in over the next four decades.

Though the actress was praised for her beauty and acting prowess, and landed two Academy Awards over the course of her career, as well as an honorary Oscar in 1993, in later years she was better known for her tumultuous personal life thanks to her string of fiery romances and mostly failed marriages. Her first one to Conrad Hilton at age 18 seemed to set the stage for the rest. It ended after just one year, in 1951, well before divorce was casually accepted. Just one year later, Taylor wed English actor Mike Wilding, with whom she would have two sons.

Taylor would have eight marriages over her lifetime, but none as controversial as her fourth to singer Eddie Fisher in 1959. Her third husband, producer Mike Todd -- who was 25 years her senior -- had died in a plane crash just a year prior. Not only had Fisher and Todd been close friends, but Fisher was married to fellow actress -- and Elizabeth's own pal -- Debbie Reynolds, and the couple had two young children together (one of which was "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher) at the time he started up his affair with Taylor.

Said Taylor of the romance: "[Eddie] and Mike had been good friends and it seemed natural we should try to comfort each other for our loss ... In hindsight, I know I wasn't thinking straight. At the time I thought he needed me and I needed him. The press made much of Eddie's leaving his wife, Debbie Reynolds, but Eddie and Debbie's marriage was in trouble long before I hit the scene.

Teams and the Color app Dream

Advertisements
Teams and the Color app Dream. The latest app making a big buzz seems to be one simply called Color. Why the hoopla about what is, at best, a location-based photo sharing app? Because they raised a whopping US$41 million dollars in funding before even launching. Before you say "bubble 2.0," let's take a look at what Color does. Although I have to wonder how much of that went to procuring the URL www.color.com -- and if this really is the peak of the new bubble.

Color, as an app, is nicely designed. When you first start it up you'll be asked to give your name. I entered Victor, but it seems you can enter anything here, and might want to consider your Twitter handle. I have no idea how Color will handle duplicate names. Will I become Victor1138 when I encounter another Victor? We shall see.

Naturally you'll have to agree to use your location, and (if you wish) push notifications. I found both dialogs came up at the same time, which was annoying. Then you take a picture of yourself, and it is appropriately tagged with a location (invisible to you) which creates a new group. Upon taking the required picture of myself, the app crashed and did not save my name.

The concept appears to be that if you and your buddies are all taking pictures at the same event, those will all be grouped together in the app, automagically, and you'll get to see one big album. Just like a photo party! That's basically it for the app. Pictures are grouped by location, within 150 feet of each other. There's even a cute warning on the app description page: DON'T USE COLOR ALONE! Once you take your first pic, you are encouraged to go out into the world and take pictures with friends using the app at the same location.

The app is free, so try it yourself and see if it is your cup of tea. But is this worth $41 million dollars in funding?

Mathew Ingram at GigaOM asked the funding question and answered it quite well, I think. It goes back to what smart investors do: invest in the team, not necessarily the dream. Color has an all-start lineup in management. Veterans of Lala, LinkedIn and BillShrink are running the company. Each one of those companies, let alone the men behind them, are fantastic (remember Apple bought Lala) and easily could parlay their networking experience into a powerful social network based on location-grouped photos.

Except, in my opinion, this team has a real challenge. They have to rapidly build a social network before competitors flip a switch and enable this very same function. Ignoring, for the moment, the fact that the Facebook app is mediocre at best, how much effort would it take to get this same functionality in the Facebook app? Even Instagram, which is enjoying some level of success in building a photo-based social network, could do this quite readily.

Just because you have an A-Team of managers and a kewl domain does not mean you will make a 10x return on investor's money. I like Color, and it's always great to see new things but in this case, color me skeptical of its success for investors. Before passing judgement yourself, be sure to look at this hilarious satire of Color's "pitch" deck -- a great parody of the mentality behind VC funding in general. Good luck, Color, you're gonna need it.

GMA' Shares 11 Ways to Claim Your Cash Unclaimed Money

GMA' Shares 11 Ways to Claim Your Cash Unclaimed Money. Billions of dollars. That's the amount of unclaimed money in the United States waiting to be given back to the rightful owners. The money includes forgotten apartment security deposits, uncashed overtime checks and lost insurance refunds, and it's sitting there, waiting for you.

Banks and other businesses are required to turn unclaimed money over to the states for safekeeping. The 50 states plus the District of Columbia have set up a free website you can use to see whether there are any forgotten funds in your name.

"GMA" decided to try it out.

At the crossroads of America, in Times Square, we set up our "GMA" unclaimed money headquarters.

Soon, we are in business and I am either a hero or a zero.

At first, we are sweating -- actually freezing -- as we come up with nothing. Nada.

But then along comes a lucky lady.

Motorola owes her money and the state of New York is sending a check.

It's important to check every state where you have lived.

And every name you've ever lived under.

Thirty-two minutes into our experiment, we hit a streak.

We found modest amounts of money for several people in a row.

Not all state websites tell you how much money you have coming.

Then a woman approached us who suspected there was unclaimed money in her husband's name. Sure enough, there were funds waiting for him from sort of unused cashier's check. And we suspected the dollar amount was high because the state of New York wasn't willing to blindly send a check. Instead, the state wanted the couple to submit a notarized affidavit to claim their funds.

We conducted 25 searches found missing money in seven of the cases.

We found money for those happy people by using the free website set up by the states. But there are some new ways to find unclaimed money by checking with the feds as well.

The Treasury Department

The Treasury Department has billions of dollars worth of savings bonds that have matured and aren't earning interest anymore but haven't been cashed in by the owners. The treasury has set up a website where you can search by social security number.

Banks

Bank deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., and if you didn't collect your money when the bank went under, the FDIC holds that money for you. For failed credit unions, the National Credit Union Association does the same thing.
